Ladies and gentlemen of the Noise , is Scott Brown our greatest captain since Billy McNeill?

Kind of hard when you consider big Roy Aitken and the centenary double, and the turmoil he and beforee him Captain Danny McGrain who led us through, the victory at Love street to win the Leauge when hearts capitulated. But without doubt Scott Brown is now a Celtic Legend and what about Lenny leading us to Seville, we have been lucky to have great captains Paul McStay and Tommy Burns first trophy as manager when Fergus Slayed the blues.

As great as broony has been, For me Paul mcstay, carried the club through one of the darkest chapters in our History when he could easily have went elsewhere. A captain is more than lifting trophies and the maestro epitomised what Celtic meant to so many. So for that point alone it's the maestro for me.

Very hard to pick but broony gets it from me to be so consistent for so long the way hes been picked on by the media also booted by thuggish players from all teams bar none gets back up and laughs in thier face.when he's in the huddle he gives the orders like a leader should.but most of all he has been written off in the media and by fans from other clubs fans sometimes by our on fans and just keeps proving people wrong.we are so fortunate to have a man like broony as our captain the day he hangs his boots up will be a sad one I hope it won't be for a few years yet.

I think he is a brilliant captain and leader on the pitch. McGrain and McStay were far superior players in my opinion but Broony drives on the team so well - even better than the force of nature that was Roy Aitken (sgain, only my opinion). I'd say in years to come fans will look back on him very favourably as a player and captain (and manager who leads us to 20IAR 😉).

Broony's trophy collection is now getting close to Big Billy's, never thought I'd see that. He's been a magnificent captain for us so I'd say yes the best since McNeil.
Paul McStay was a special player and a special man and he holds a unique place in the hearts of Celtic fans and he deserved to captain a more successful Celtic team.
I see a lot of similarity in the way Broony and Lenny captained Celtic on and off the field, does that mean we could have Broony the manager one day? 🤔

Can't dispute Scott Brown's record as captain. He deserves to be held in the esteem that he is, but for me - in some of our darkest days, Paul McStay was the one shining beacon of light. Injuries hampered him in his last few seasons and constant speculation didn't help either, but when Celtic called - The Maestro answered.

It broke my heart having to watch him play with inferior and sub-standard players, there can be no doubt that affected his game, as he was often having to cover for the deficiencies in others.

The saddest day in my Celtic supporting life was having to see the heartbreak when he missed his pen against Raith Rovers. Of all the people in the world, he was the person who least deserved that fate.

I don't think anyone can doubt that Cesar was a world class defender. Danny was a world class full-back prior to being captain, but we tend to forget that Paul McStay would have graced any stage or any club in the world for a 7-year period.

Scott Brown has been a terrific servant and an inspiring captain(as well as an underrated player), but only the most optimistic among us would suggest he was world class.

It's unfair on Scott and all of our skippers to compare them against Billy McNeil, but I have a soft spot for Paul McStay and he gets my vote.

I was at that game it was awful :(
The fact that it was at the shithole made it even worse. That was also the day I realised that I hated Gordon Marshall for a reason and that Charlie Nicholas maybe should have just retired from football as soon as he scored.

It was also the day that I thought I would never see Celtic win another trophy. At least we didn't have to wait too long for that fear to go away.

I mentioned on a post a few weeks ago SP that I thought Paul McStay could have graced any team from Lisbon till now, truly wonderful player, you could say the same about Danny McGrain. Not many teams in the world would have turned down that pair, we were blessed to have them.

I missed Danny at his peak, but even in the 80's, he was a wily old fox that could read danger 5 seconds before anybody else. Brilliant crosser of the ball and great one-touch passer.

McStay had everything, if he played at Liverpool, then Dalglish would have been only the second best player in their history.

Single-handedly got Scotland to two World Cups too.
