Game management – how Celtic must improve...

So Careless – Celtic a Whisper away from a Win, Duffy’s Ambrose and Garner Comparisons...

I don't know about nowadays, but a long, long time ago, teams worked on combatting or consolidating every scenario based on the 13 players that they could select for any given game.

Bigger benches offer more alternatives, but perhaps that has caused managers/coaches to alter games via personnel, rather than by formulating adaptive plans and tactics.

There are also in-game decisions that still often bewilder me too though......

Yesterday Scott Bain played three 5-yard by-kicks to Shane Duffy who was standing parallel to him, Duffy then went on to launch the ball 50-yards up the park only for it to come right back at them. Duffy and Ajer are now completely out of shape and have to make up the 20-yards they just conceded by playing short????

Aberdeen had served notice that they were prepared to press a wee bit, so playing short like that is nothing more than gross incompetence.

In the grand scheme of things, it might seem like a minor detail, but it's silly in-game features like that which invites unnecessary pressure on an already creaky defence?

I just don't get it........if it's not on to play short, then just cut oot the middle man and launch it up the field. At least then if it comes back then the defence are suitably positioned to deal with it.

Willie Collum is a tool, but our boys (especially McGregor and Ntcham) made it so easy for him to make his calls by making ridiculous challenges in our danger zones. That's just poor game management! Foul your tits aff in their half, but not in and around our penalty box?

That's just feckin dumb.........

Going to start this week on a daily positive note.
I would not let Duffy near a football for a week. He should be totally isolated from our useless and mysterious defensive coaches. Instead he should be put on a VR screen to study Chiellini. A real proper defender who focuses and thrives on doing the very basics of defending properly. I think the lad can come good with proper basic defensive coaching focusing on the priorities of defending, a good hand round his shoulder at this tough time, encouragement and getting his head back up. We know he wants to play for the jersey, so in this bad time give him help and I think he will come good.

Maybe a bit late to learn the basics.... he's almost ready to retire.

We can all lose the focus on important things and as a result make mistakes. We then go back to analysing and putting it right , then move on again. Football is no different. He is not the first player, nor will he be the last to find himself in this position. Crucifying him does not help. Helping him sort it out does.
The old adage "you're never too old to learn", applies to everything.

Maybe by sending him back to Brighton or even Derry to relearn the basics would help CELTIC. the club are my only interest

I take your point, POD, but if we were asking him to completely restyle his game, then it might take a bit of time to transition.

The fact is, is that he only has one task for which he is being handsomely paid and that is to perform pretty basic defensive duties. No one expected him to be Beckenbauer, POD........just a ready made, rough and tumble, no nonsense centre half.

Like you pod I think he will come good , but he needs to make it simple , play simply , stop fucking about with 50 yard passes to no one , win the ball in the air, every 50/50 crunch them on the ground and in the air , I hope we see a better player than we have so far
Maybe just maybe he is trying to hard

Hi SP, he has never been a Beckenbauer in the making nor he will never be. I just want him to get back to basic defending, exactly what Torrancetim says and maybe then become capable of a small fraction of what Chiellini is capable of. That will do us.

Honestly if he had a baw hair of Chiellinis ability he'd be doing well.Seen milk turn quicker .

As I have said previously; Duffy has never played in an attack minded team - when did Brighton or Ireland ever have 60% possession in the opponents half with 7 or 8 players in attacking positions- that may be what he needs to learn. It may also of course highlight poor homework in what we can expect from our signings and what is their development plan. I would actually question our whole development plan as we seem to have too many players stagnating or regressing at the same time. This becomes a bigger worry as their value starts to follow. An unsuccessful season will knock millions off the value of our wantaways. I better stop before the pessimism gets a real grip, I do know there are alternative scenarios.

From what ive seen so far i wonder how did he manage to cope down south,he would get the drawers ripped off him down there surely.

Before I get lynched for been a Shane Duffy fan I would like to point out a couple of things not in his defence, but using him as the best example of many things we see that are not right.
First of all I have watched Shane Duffy many times for lreland before he came to us, and as a defender he is only really a penalty box defender, or to win high long balls so fairly limited in ability for what the modern CB and celtic are looking for. Jules and ajer have been slaughtered for not being physically strong enough especially against killi.
I listened to WGS at half time blaming duffy for not tracking the lanky sweed into an area where I would say midfielders or full back's should be covering, so any form of ball into a wide area is always going to have duffy in trouble with his lack of pace.
So on Saturday when he tracks the player it leaves the hole where ntcham to busy ball watching and lazy to track a run, resulting in a pen.
Also we see duffy, 1 minute sending 1 of the sheep into the stand on the left side, then getting caught out on the right side. I don't and won't feel comfortable seeing duffy in these positions.
We like to see our CB recycle the ball to put us back on the front foot, Duffy is used to the safety first approach but like many tries to be to clever for his own good.
This playing out from the back will only work if the midfield start showing for the easy ball to give him the easy out ball which hasn't been on against teams who close down that space.
Our closing down of the ball is brutal at the moment and our tracking of runners from midfield even worse.
Teams will play upon weekness within our defence and haven't seen much from management or coaching to address obvious problems.
Is it no wonder with such a lack of instructions or are our defence playing to these instructions as I am getting a sence of make it up as we go along and hope something will come right.

Good analysis John, Duffy was being asked to do a job he doesn’t have the ability to do. Same thing happened at Brighton, that’s was he regressed from being their first choice centre back to 4th choice. When he plays for Ireland he’s told to defend his box and give the ball to someone who knows wat their fucking doing. I actually though he looked ok in a back 4 at the wknd until he fucked up....again!
