Growing up in the 70's one of my goalkeeping heroes was Ray Clemence. I wasn't a fan of Liverpool, I have family members who are Toffeemen and they would have disavowed me if I dared to show any empathy towards them, but in spite of that - I still admired the goalkeeping ability of Ray Clemence.

I struggle to tolerate the broadcast and print media in the UK, so I just found out via YouTube that Ray Clemence ecently passed away. I feel sadder than I probably should, but Liverpool were one of the teams you were most likely to see on TV during the 70's and there is a certain nostalgia attached to Ray Clemence and how he helped me find a position where I could actually play without being too much of a natural disaster.

Many folk talk about Manuel Neuer and the sweeper-keeper role, but Ray Clemence performed this role in the 70's and very seldom did he get caught in possession the way that Neuer often does.

For all of his athleticism and acrobatics, my abiding memory of Clemence is when Kenny nutsed him at Hampden in '77.

RIP Ray.........you can take some goalkeeping lessons fae the Faither and Prince John now (and keep your legs shut).
