Celtic player you wish you'd seen wearing the Hoops

My first memory of a Celtic game is the European Cup v Atletico Madrid.
I wish I had seen those Celtic players five years earlier. If I was five or six years older I would have been old enough to remember everything that team achieved. As it was, it all happened in my lifetime but I was too young to remember most of it.

Such a pity to lose such a talent at such a young age:

Sure was .From a young age I was brought up on the story's of Peter and how good he was. It was tragic,he was at the beginning of a promising Career when he died. I've no doubt he would have become a Celtic hero. He might not haved lived long enough to have a long Celtic career but,in my mind he is definitely a legend, and one of only 3 to have played for Celtic, Dixie Dean's and Paul Lambert the other two.

Following on from Winter's excellent (big very tough) top 5 players you've seen wear the Hoops, which Celtic legend do you wish you had seen? It might be a brilliant player who left before your time, or maybe an old hero that your Dad or Grandfather worshipped.

I guess there will be many younger fans who will say Jinky for the obvious reasons as he was probably our greatest ever entertainer, so you may wish to add a second choice instead/as well.

I feel sad that I missed out on Bobby Murdoch - it seems that all supporters just a little bit older than me and club historians absolutely rave about his tremendous skill, guile and tenacity as he contributed so much to us winning auld big ears, but sadly he was gone by the time I started supporting the Hoops as a very young bhoy.

Got to be John Thomson for me

He died 75 years to the day that my father did 5th September 1931

I asked my late uncle a few years before he passed away if he had ever seen Thomson play?

My uncle who had been a goal keeper after the war said that he had only seen him play once

My uncle who was from Aberdeen said that Aberdeen played Celtic at Pittodrie

My uncle was 10 or 11 at the time born in 1919 so this wouldn't have been long before Thomson's death

My uncle told me that he had got into the stadium just after kick off and as he fought his way through the crowd to get to the perimeter wall at the front of the terracing he said 'Thomson leapt to catch a cross and I swear that his waist was level with the crossbar'

Seems a bit far fetched but who am I to question an eye witness Especially one who wasn't a Celtic supporter?

Thomson was a renowned athlete fitness fanatic and gentleman Hence his nickname 'the Prince of Goalkeepers despite HUNS attributing that nic to Jerry Dawson

Nothing changes by the look of things?

HH?

Aye Bill, seems like he was a hell of a nice person and an athlete ahead of his time. So sad he passed so young. Very poignant for you that it was the same date as your Dad. ?

He was unstoppable in that 50-goal season, BB.........do you remember the goal on his debut for Scotland against Switzerland?

I agree about the Arsenal thing too, far too much temptation for a young boy in London.
I think I recall Radio Clyde running a competition for the first to 30 goals in a season back then and Charlie Nicholas having it wrapped up by about Christmas. Now he's just a charlie.

Was that the goal where the ball came over his shoulder and he seemed to control it with his right thigh, let it drop and volleyed it into the net with his left foot?
