Anthony Joseph has claimed that Wilfried Nancy is on the short list to become the next Celtic manager.

Over the course of the weekend there appeared to be a body of reports promoting the Columbus Crew manager to replace Brendan Rodgers.

MSL EXPERIENCE

Nancy has spent all of his career in North America but with his contract expiring a move to Europe appears to be his target.

The 48-year-old Frenchman has managed Montreal and Colombus in the MLS. Switching to Scotland in mid-season would be a risky move for both parties.

Joseph has a steady stream of Celtic related news, late on Monday he provided a managerial update with Nancy the lead item.

Sky Sports News reported:

Columbus Crew boss Wilfried Nancy has emerged as a candidate for the Celtic managerial vacancy.

It is understood the 48-year-old is among the names on the shortlist to replace Brendan Rodgers, which also includes Bodo/Glimt’s Kjetil Knutsen and Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna.

In the last two years, Nancy has won the MLS Cup and Leagues Cup as well as being named MLS Coach of the Year. He also took Columbus Crew to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final last year.

The Celtic hierarchy are still pondering over whether to extend interim boss Martin O’Neill’s time in charge of the club, with a busy set of fixtures and cup final on the horizon after the international break.

That could allow time for some targets to become more available later in the year. As Sky Sports News revealed last week, Celtic are pleased with the way O’Neill has galvanised the squad and lifted the mood at Celtic Park.

Discussions between principal shareholder Dermot Desmond and O’Neill are due to take place this week.

Since the announcement that Brendan Rodgers had resigned and the statement from Dermot Desmond there has been no news directly from Celtic.

Martin O’Neill has been asked constantly about his intentions. He knows the news business and has given nothing away.

Two weeks on from the resignation of Rodgers plans should be at an advanced stage to put his successor in place.

THE INTERIMS

While the partnership of Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney appears to be doing fine domestically there is a clear need for a permanent manager.

Plans should be well underway for the January transfer window with the thoughts of the manager crucial to get things right.

On Friday November 21 Celtic stage their AGM, if no manager is in place there are bound to be questions about the recruitment process.

Mid-season changes always create problems but the international break is the perfect time to make changes.

From November 22 until the end of January the fixture list is packed with two matches a week including a cup final and four Europa League matches.
