You spend every day on a Celtic website to discuss Celtic so your definitely a proper tim club it’s in your heartTommy, this is nothing new. As a wee football-daft loon growing up in Forfar the only fitba I had a chance to see was on the tv (my Dad always worked Saturdays). In those days you got highlights of 1 match per week on Sportscene on a Saturday night, then another on Scotsport on a Sunday afternoon plus all of the Cup Final & Scotland/England annual clash. And the world cup every 4 years, so not a lot to choose from.
So I started to support Celtic as they were on a lot and successful (and my pal's big brother supported them too so put a bit of pressure on us all). I got my first Celtic strip for my 4th birthday - wearing club sirts was not a big deal in the early 1970s.
So you see, I am also a glory hunter. A widden Tim. I am not from Glasgow. I have no Irish heritage. I am not catholic. But I supported Celtic from afar because of peer pressure and because they were a very successful side. I loved Kenny Dalglish too so when he moved to Liverpool I followed them as well.
Would Celtic have had such a loyal and widespread global fanbase if we hadn't appointed Jock Stein in 1965 and went on to so much success? If we hadn't and continued to be just another mid-table club with a glorious past who enjoyed the occasional trophy - would we have so many fans scattered around the world? Possibly, or probably not. I can say that those that would still support us would be just as passionate and fervent in their support. But I suspect there might be fewer. But in the same way, if the newly successful clubs continue then in a couple of generations time their global fanbase will be just as loyal and probably even more nuerous given the global nature of today's sport (business).
Best regards,
A glory-hunting Widden Tim![]()
