Dermot Desmond Q&A

Celtic’s principal shareholder, Dermot Desmond, today responded to a number of questions and issues raised by supporters in an exclusive interview with the official Celtic website.
When can we expect the appointment of a manager?
As with any key appointment at Celtic, there is a process which involves research, investigation, interviewing and negotiation. This process is underway and is taking place privately and when complete, the Board will make a public announcement.
Who is in charge of the process?
The Chairman Ian Bankier, Peter Lawwell and myself take a lead in the process, and naturally, the incoming CEO will also participate. Any decision made will require Board approval.
Could you give us some idea of the type of candidate you are looking for
?
We are mindful of the fact that there is a huge amount of interest and speculation among our supporters and the press. However, we have to respect the privacy of potential candidates and the integrity of the process, and so I think it would be inappropriate to make comment on the type of candidate we are looking for.
What is your analysis of the season?
Firstly, the season is not over yet, as we are still in the Scottish Cup. However, my current thoughts are that this season has been extremely disappointing. Decision-making in football is not an exact science and I accept without qualification that we have made some wrong calls. We will endeavour to learn from those. However, the conjecture coming from some journalists, commentators and pundits that they foresaw the outcome of this season is entirely disingenuous in my opinion.

Regardless of whether we won the league or not this year, we knew that the 2021/22 season would be a transitional year for the team. A number of the existing squad would more than likely be departing or returning to their parent clubs, but we felt that, in order to give the team the best chance of success this year to achieve the overriding ambition, we should endeavour to retain these players, despite receiving a number of substantial bids. In so doing, we recognised that this would add to the recruitment requirements for the subsequent season. We recognise that we have under-performed both on and off the pitch and must do better.
It has been reported that you should sell your shares in Celtic as you are not a true fan?
This is a contemptible suggestion. I am as passionate about Celtic as any other supporter. My shares are not for sale. Brian Dempsey, in an article in The Times, is reported to be floating the idea that fans should own the Club and that we have reverted back to where we were in 1994. When I think about the strength of this Club today and the playing success that we have enjoyed to date, these are entirely attributable to being financially strong and being professionally managed under stable ownership. When I look back at the record of the Club since 2001, we have achieved remarkable success and encountered only a few set-backs along the way. This season has been one of them, but it does not re-create the conditions of the early 1990s, as Mr Dempsey would like to have us believe.
It is said that the Board is not fit for purpose. How do you react to that criticism?
One of Fergus McCann’s tenets was that the Club would be run professionally and that we should never return to the position he inherited where the entire existence of Celtic could be jeopardised by mis-management and unacceptable levels of indebtedness. Celtic is and will continue to be run on a meritocratic basis by the best executives available at the time. There is no member of the Celtic Board that I personally knew before they were appointed. We have maintained this policy and it has endured the test of time. In a professional manner we conduct our business behind closed doors, we don’t seek public acclaim for everything we do. Critics are in no position to judge what they cannot see.

We are very fortunate to have Ian Bankier as our Chairman and he leads a diverse and extremely talented Board. We could not have had a better CEO, nor a more committed Celtic supporter than Peter Lawwell. He has built a solid platform upon which our new CEO, Dominic McKay, can build. With every Board appointment we make, we undertake a thorough recruitment process of researching, investigating, interviewing and negotiating, unknown to all except the Celtic Board members. That will be the same process that is being implemented in recruiting our next manager.
What are your hopes for next season?
That we recruit a manager that plays football the way that all Celtic supporters want and that we give that manager the time to implement their own plans. After that, I am sure much more success will follow.

Frightening how out of touch he is. Him, Bankier and Lawwell working on bringing in new manager, no mention of a change in structure and a DoF type position being created.
Expect Roy Keane to be closely followed by season ticket renewals. Get the banners out for the top tier of stands.

why wasn't he asked how lennon was appointed manager in the showers at hampden, especially when he stated that they didn't look at any other candidates

He gave Gerry the list of questions and answers to be published.

What I find so damming in that bollox is the admission to keeping players when offers were made for them. I would say this is a huge reason for such an under preforming season.
It is well known keeping unhappy players will only lead to a toxic changing room with players not giving there all for the club. Add in the amount of loan signings on possibly higher wages and is it any wonder we got served up the amount of shite this season.
Still leaves unanswered questions as to who was responsible for such disastrous dicisions and it would be a safe bet to say PL traitor was involved and sickening to think the Bastard is still involved in getting in a new manager

Dermot Desmond is angry and unhappy that he is being portrayed, as not being a Celtic fan.

Well, he sat on his hands and watched the historic TIAR dream disappear out of sight, a disaster of a european campaign unfold, our club turning on itself, being gleefully ridiculed by opponents and the media on a daily basis, a manager left badly struggling with his reputation shredded. During all of these disasters he maintained his silence.

He could have done an awful lot to prevent those unfolding disasters. I don't want him to throw his own money at the club. No way, but what I want of him, is to ensure the club is run properly in all departments. Which cleary was not happening.

Why?

I believe that for financial purposes, he is wedded to the 'Old Firm' concept. A reincarnated, and winning 'Rangers' is worth more financially to him than a dominant Celtic.

This is why he did nothing. He left Peter Lawell to his own devices for far longer than it was wise to do so. And in doing so, ensured an egocentric, parasitic, controlling influence that brought us to the position we now find ourselves at.

I actually think Dermot Desmond is a genuine Celtic supporter.

But he now has a big decision to make.
Does he love the club more than making money? If so, get it right this time. For me, this means a public statement from the Club knocking this idiotic nonsense of an 'Old Firm' brand on the head, once and for all.

A decent managerial appointment with the manager's own team supporting him. An effective scouting and recruitment department. Ensure the Club no longer becomes the personal fifedom of a megalomaniac CEO. A Board that listens to the views of its supporters.

Get this done and success will follow.

There was a rumour yesterday that Keane would be appointed manager with Nicky Butt as his assistant. Butt has just stepped down from his position at Man Utd to take up a different challenge.
After listening to Martin O'Neil at the weekend go on about Roy Keane I've thought about it and I'm coming round to the idea of Roy being the new manager, I must admit I was against him as Celtic manager, but after watching the half arsed displays from Celtic this season, Roy just might be what we need, and with Nicky Butt as a buffer I'm even more interested in the idea.

Lets be honest most of this squad will be gone next season and if Roy gets his type of player in then I can see it working.

But please can we get someone in before the end of the season.

Don't want Keane anywhere near the Celtic manager's job but have resigned myself to it happening. What would make it more acceptable, and maybe even work, is a good coaching team working with him. Butt has a very good reputation at Man U and has helped develop the likes of Rashford, McTominay and Greenwood, if he was part of the coaching staff and maybe with either Damien Duff or Shaun Maloney then it would be interesting.
Still not convinced re. Keane

Likewise Gary about Keane.
As much as I dislike keane as an individual, if given the job I would have to support him however hard as it would be.
Only believe it could work if a decent coaching team was bought in with him but also could mean the merry go around could continue.
If they were to be successful then when the man u job becomes available I could see them leaving us high and dry.
Would feel more comfortable getting a manager in that is really prepared to follow through the job he starts and not using the club just to help build there own profile and ready to jump ship when any other potential offer comes there way.
A big ask maybe, but one we have to believe is possible
