Alistair Johnston believes that he is ahead of schedule as he recovers from a serious hamstring injury.
The defender pulled up sharply during the first half of the Champions League qualifier on August 20, two days later Brendan Rodgers said that Johnston was likely to be out for ‘about 12 weeks’.
That would see the player out of action until late November but four weeks down the line Johnston feels that he is closing in on an earlier return.
Speaking to the Park The Bus podcast he seemed as engaging and enthusiastic as ever despite the injury.
Johnston starts at 26 minutes:
Johnston added:
Tony Ralston initially replaced Johnston at right-back but with the Scotland man also injured Colby Donovan started the 2-1 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday.

When the injury originally happened, I feared the worst. It’s a pretty significant injury but I’m actually ahead of schedule. Still a long way to go.
I’m not really going to put a timeline on it yet. I’m taking it day by day but I feel really good. I feel like I’m ready to go back out there and play, but a lot of boxes still need ticked.
I’m taking it day by day but I’m hoping to be back earlier than originally expected.
Johnston added:
It was a really weird one. I had never done a muscle before, never mind a hamstring, so I didn’t really know what to expect.
I was hoping it was just going to be cramp but the physios said it was going to be pretty significant.
We have players in our team who have history (with similar injuries), including Kieran Tierney. He asked me ‘did you hear a pop’ and I didn’t know if I did.
I realised it was going to be serious but was hoping it wasn’t going to be the worst-case scenario.
Luckily the scan backed that up as well. It’s not one that needed surgery which is massive for myself in terms of the club season, but also internationally as well.
Going into a World Cup year, it’s the last thing you want starting a season. I’m lucky it isn’t as bad as first feared.
