John Kennedy - Sporting Director?

What's he done at any level? All this talk of the players love him is the exact same players who supposedly loved Lennon, yet downed tools on him. Has anyone ever heard a player when asked saying his coach or manager are shite?
Kennedy is complicit in this bollox of a season. Get him to fuck.
If he 'is complicit in this bollox of a season', does he get the credit for being part of a management team that won 6 titles in a row and 4 trebles in a row?

No u canny live aff any good will from that period of time past year n a bit we have been woeful in defence in particular imo we were just lucky to win the Scottish for the 4th treble it was nothing to do with lennon or Kennedys tactical acumen wich shud be very obvious considering wits happened this season

Yes and in management you are only as good as your last season, so he had to keep on winning, tbf he was also part of the treble under Lenny so he has to be given credit, this season was the fault of all at Celtic not one individual and besides if we have McManus and Darren O Dea hanging around then JK looks like Pep compared to these two.

Doubt it's true but if it is, then the big man is clearly highly regarded by those in footballing circles who HAVE ACTUALLY worked with him over the years in some sort of capacity..maybe he is far too valuable to let go to another club? Who knows? What I do know is that the abuse he receives from his own people is out of order... "get him to fuck, big nose, grass " etc. All out of order and bordering on the same shite that Celtic legend Lennon received...

Under Rodgers he was supposedly in charge of the defence. I don't need to elaborate on that. Then when Lennon took over he admitted that they changed nothing from when Rodgers was there. Damien duff was obviously the glue that kept the team together. When he left the wheels came off and both Lennon and Kennedy seemed clueless as to what to do. He then got his chance to change things up to his way of thinkin and he done fuck all different to what Lennon was doing. Which proves that either he totally agreed with Lennon or that he had more of a say than what we originally thought.
There's not a person I know in any other job that would still have their job and keep bein moved from pillar to post to suit him.
And let's say we give him credit for all these achievements you listed. He's still partly responsible for one of the biggest fuck ups of seasons in Celtics history. Do you honestly think he should be kept on?

I genuinely don't understand what Kennedy is doing, he must be somebody's love child. Is he going to be on hand when Howe gets the boot for drawing 2 games in a row. This stinks to high heaven. Is he going to be a proxy for pistol Pete. Sorry but he needs to be removed from the club and go and live in the real world. HH

He must have pics of Desmond and Lawell with a couple of ladyboys or something because they seem to be doing their damndest to crowbar him into the main set-up somewhere...anywhere!

I suspect Kelly is right....the board's eyes and ears within the football operation! :cautious:

From assistant to youth coach wouldn't fly what a step down ,he would be better breaking free and making strides into management himself like broonys doing , he's doing himself no favours hanging around from one manager to the next

Nobody knows what his role is within the club every new manager he gets a new title if he was as highly rated as all these players say why has nobody come knockin lookin for him

The point is.....if whoever is calling the shots at Celtic is adamant that John Kennedy is to stay employed at Celtic Park (I again emphasise the point, if he is definitely staying) then there is an arguement that he would be better suited to a role in youth developmental as opposed to being the main man.

Why? He successfully came through this coaching system himself at Celtic so he would personally know what it takes re the application, dedication, skills, single mindedness, belief, knowledge, et al, to make it at senior level.

He was also an excellent player too, which I’m sure younger players would appreciate and look up to. Some of the important requirements listed of a youth coach I would think. He also must have other positive personal and football traits as he is spoken well of by former players and coaches.

I again empathise, my opinion is made on the premise that he has to be accommodated at Celtic Park in some capacity.

Not one I agree with by the way. But if he has to remain, then youth development is where I feel he very well may be a good fit for the reasons stated previously.....if you don’t agree with my sentiments, then I’m happy to hear why you constructively think he would be a failure at this level.....over to you...
I dont think it quite works like that. Not everybody that comes through a good coaching system automatically becomes a good coach and not all good footballers become good coaches either. I dont believe he has good enough qualifications for youth coach at Celtic., but i understand your point about Celtic seeming determined to keep him. Did he ever play the sweeper role? Maybe he could brush out the changing rooms.

Said as much the other week mate, needs to go prove himself elsewhere first if he wants to be considered for any of the top roles at Celtic, go earn the right to be in contention.

If he goes and smashes it as a manager or DoF at a good level elsewhere then I'm sure he'd be welcomed back with open arms by most but until he does there will always be the suspicion he doesn't deserve it and certainly hasn't earned it.

You're right he's doing himself no favours by hanging around.

All of us should want the best most experienced people we can possibly get in every department at Celtic, we should not be handing top positions to unproven hopefuls just because they're a comfortable option or a familiar face to the club hierarchy. Plus given how those at the top have supported and employed him ever since his playing career was brought to an end early, how can we trust that he'll push back and challenge them when he needs to if he feels that he's indebted to them?

Other than goalkeeper we don't have specialist positional coaches. In fact if we did under Rodgers it would have been Kolo Toure who was defensive coach, but he wasn't he did one on one sessions with players in all positions (as he does at Leicester).
Should he be kept on? Probably not if we want to go down the route of a European style Sporting division under a Sporting Director. That needs a complete change in the whole of the footballing operation. But if its the same, or similar, structure to what we currently have then doesn't really matter if its him or another powerless company man. The same people will make the same decisions as they've been doing for years and we won't progress.

Kennedy has demonstrated that he does not have the skillset necessary to manage a club with such high expectations of success. It is time for him to accept his role in this catastrophe of a season, and move on. Anybody within Celtic pushing his appointment to such a role, is either brain dead or has another agenda.
Time to go of your own accord, John. If not, time to push you out.

JOHN KENNEDY is in the frame to become Celtic’s sporting director.

SunSport understands the Hoops want interim boss JK to work closely with top target Eddie Howe who remains on course to become Neil Lennon’s permanent successor this summer.

Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin also remains under consideration for the sporting director role.

It now appears unlikely Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes will be heading north.

That will be a big blow for Howe, but it’s not thought to be a deal-breaker for a Parkhead switch this summer.

It’s been a month since the ex-Cherries boss met Hoops supremo Dermot Desmond, chief executive Peter Lawwell and his successor Dominic McKay in London.

Celtic fans excited over the prospect of Howe being appointed have started to grow restless over the lack of news.

But he has spent that time speaking to contacts in the game and doing his homework on the Hoops.

Howe, 43, has been quietly planning his backroom staff, with current Bournemouth coaches Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone prominent in his thinking.

The identity of those who come in to improve the recruitment department is also vital to Howe’s plans to transform the club.

He’s keen to have key assistants committed to joining him before official confirmation of his move north.

Desmond has promised him substantial transfer resources and full authority over his staff.

It’s expected that Howe will have a £2million-a-year salary.

The board also values Kennedy, 37, who has been at Parkhead since 1998. He went from player to coach, to No 2 and is now stand-in boss.

JK was in the frame to become director of football while Brendan Rodgers was boss in 2019.

Kennedy will stay in charge for the final three games against Rangers, St Johnstone and Hibs.

With a new boss coming in, he had indicated he could decide it’s finally the right moment for him to head elsewhere.

Asked last week if that could be a possibility Kennedy, a one-time Hibs target, confessed: “Yeah, it might.

"But I’m genuinely not stressed about what the future holds for me.”

Now the future looks set to involve a step upstairs and a key role in a new-look football department at Parkhead.
Please no John Kennedy has spent enough time at Celtic Park it's time for a clearout he has to go

Don't necessarily disagree with you on all points, but it's been quite a few years since he was a player so many of the youth team players might not know he actually played 1st team football. Now on its own this might not negate his ability as a coach but it surely it still impacts it. I believe he has to leave the club to gain the overall sense of the game, his lack of experience outside of Celtic IMHO is another negative. HH

Another view on John Kennedy and the DOF role from a Bhoy on CQN

LENNYBHOY on 29TH APRIL 2021 7:38 PM
Good evening CQN

Not been on for a bit.

From what I hear and it is just what I hear, Eddie Howe is in pole position to be announced next week as our new manager. Deals can collapse at the eleventh hour as we know. However, if Eddie wants the job it is his. Once the sevco game is out the way we will find out.

The story in the rags, JK for DoF or Technical Director, from what I hear, rubbish. I am not saying John won’t be kept on in some capacity but not in the aforementioned roles. Fergal Harkin is in pole position for DoF, has been for awhile. If there is also a Technical Director brought in as has been touted it will not be JK. Names like Hughes at Bournemouth or Neil McGuiness.

Don’t believe or be influenced by what you read in the rags or indeed draw inferences on articles put out by ‘CQN’.

JK if retained, will not be DoF.

Celtic will announce when they are ready and indeed when Eddie Howe decides if he is going to sign on the dotted line. The deal is not done, nothing is until it is announced. However, Howe is in pole position.

Until we meet again…

Keep the Faith!

Hail Hail!

I agree with you on the fact that some of the negative comments can be too personal but the fact that we don't get any communication from the club leaves a lot of us frustrated. The thing is that we keep hearing from various sources /ex-colleagues of his that he is highly regarded among his peers. The fact that most of us have no idea what he actually does leaves him open to the personal negativity. This and the fact that it seems he has a job for life for no apparent reason again compounds this. I still think he needs to leave the club and try to make his own way in the real world to see what skills he actually has. HH
