The saddest day in my Celtic supporting life was having to see the heartbreak when he missed his pen against Raith Rovers. Of all the people in the world, he was the person who least deserved that fate.
The fact that it was at the shithole made it even worse. That was also the day I realised that I hated Gordon Marshall for a reason and that Charlie Nicholas maybe should have just retired from football as soon as he scored.I was at that game it was awful
I mentioned on a post a few weeks ago SP that I thought Paul McStay could have graced any team from Lisbon till now, truly wonderful player, you could say the same about Danny McGrain. Not many teams in the world would have turned down that pair, we were blessed to have them. Can't dispute Scott Brown's record as captain. He deserves to be held in the esteem that he is, but for me - in some of our darkest days, Paul McStay was the one shining beacon of light. Injuries hampered him in his last few seasons and constant speculation didn't help either, but when Celtic called - The Maestro answered.
It broke my heart having to watch him play with inferior and sub-standard players, there can be no doubt that affected his game, as he was often having to cover for the deficiencies in others.

I don't think anyone can doubt that Cesar was a world class defender. Danny was a world class full-back prior to being captain, but we tend to forget that Paul McStay would have graced any stage or any club in the world for a 7-year period.
Scott Brown has been a terrific servant and an inspiring captain(as well as an underrated player), but only the most optimistic among us would suggest he was world class.
It's unfair on Scott and all of our skippers to compare them against Billy McNeil, but I have a soft spot for Paul McStay and he gets my vote.
I missed Danny at his peak, but even in the 80's, he was a wily old fox that could read danger 5 seconds before anybody else. Brilliant crosser of the ball and great one-touch passer.I mentioned on a post a few weeks ago SP that I thought Paul McStay could have graced any team from Lisbon till now, truly wonderful player, you could say the same about Danny McGrain.
