Alistair Johnston will undergo surgery on his hamstring on Tuesday.

The Canadian internationalist suffered a hamstring injury during the first half of the home Champions League tie against Kairat Almaty on August 20.

His return against Sturm Graz on October 23 lasted just 25 minutes when his hamstring went again.

Now that the extent of the injury has been assessed the full extent is known, Johnston looks unlikely to play again this year.

Asked about today’s injury to Marcelo Saracchi, The Celtic Way reports O’Neill saying:

He’s done his hamstring. I don’t know what this game is about. And the other two lads, Osmand and Johnston, are having surgery on Tuesday so they are going to be out for a long time.

Colby Donovan played at right-back against Hearts with Tony Ralston selected for the three matches that followed. Today Jahmai Simpson-Pusey made his Celtic debut, playing at right-back.

INJURY AND FIXTURE PILE UP

Injuries are becoming a growing problem with Osmand against Midtjylland and Marcelo Saracchi today against Kilmarnock both suffering hamstring injuries.

Celtic have 12 days between matches now thanks to the international break to prepare for a hectic series of matches.

The club AGM will be held the day before facing St Mirren, managerial issues are likely to dominate the headlines.

Whoever is in charge has some serious issues in defence with Johnston, Carter-Vickers and Saracchi all out for varying lengths of time.

Following the trip to Paisley Celtic are away to Feyenoord and Hibs with matches against Hearts and the League Cup Final coming up in the first half of December.

With a full squad it would be a challenging schedule. After poor recruitment and a run of injuries it looks even more daunting.

O’Neill or an incoming manager will have to face that issue head on.

The only player likely to return from injury in the near future is Kelechi Iheanacho who was injured in the costly victory over Sturm Graz.

Carter-Vickers and Osman are likely to miss out on the remaining Europa League matches, any January signings won’t be eligible to play in the matches against Bologna and Utrecht.
