I think back to when I was leaving school and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Imagine saying to my Dad or my Granda's "I want to be a blogger, or influencer...money will just flow in and I'll be famous..." My arse wouldn't have hit the pavement fast enough. Am I an auld crabbit bastard ? Perhaps. Do I have time for those amongst us who never picked up a shovel or worked out in the pouring rain, snow or inclement weather EVER...of course not. I was a delivery driver after I retired, cause I got fed up sitting on my jacksie. One morning a young guy of about 19 walks in, he's half hour late for his first shift, and he has a Starbucks coffee in his hand...THAT, was duly noted. Remember it's his first day and I'm big on first impressions. I said I'll run through the paper work with you, but for now, you garb the tote bins out of the freezer (about half a dozen)and I'll grab the 30 odd ones out of the cooler...I'm in my sixties, he's 19...that's important as the story continues. He looked at me as if I was speaking Klingon...I said behind you is the cooler, grab the tote bins and the hand cart, we have to load the orders then go deliver them. His next words were "Whoa, wait man, I was hired as a driver, I don't DO manual labour..." Did I mention he was 19 !!! I grabbed the phone and called HQ, saying this kid showed up, late, but he had time to get a coffee, now he tells me he's hired to just drive the truck, not lift and carry boxes...I have no idea as to how he's going to levitate them up to people's houses, but I do know one thing, he ain't coming out with me 'click'. "They want to speak to you...have a good life kid, you'll reach your true calling in life eventually, WalMart is hiring (casting no aspersions on those who work in retail) but FFS, my Granda's would have slapped the shit out of him. To be honest, I showed enormous restraint myself. Yes, I worked hard all my life, it's in my DNA, as it is in many of you. Have a pleasant week everyone. And do not make eye contact with people who walk out into traffic as they stare at their phone. It is however the process of natural selection. HH
