I take your point but I don't think it's unfair to say that we routinely have ridiculous amounts of possession but the side to side and backwards passing that has crept into our game more and more over the last few months has seen us doing less and less with it. That opinion has been a recurring theme from many on here for months!

Start of the season we were playing some great football, we played with pace and purpose....but it's obvious we've lost that zip we had earlier in the season, we seem to fall into a pattern (especially in the 2nd 45 of games) of taking the easy side or back pass far too often. I get it's BR's probing style of play, take your time probe for the weakness and all that but it's being overdone to the point it's making us ponderous on the ball.

Just my opinion but I would say it was our early season form that put us in the position you mention above and if we were relying on recent form then things wouldn't be looking quite so cosy.
Its a fair point but the fact weve played 23 games since mid October is taking its toll.
Lots of changes to the team to
From BBC gossip this morning

You'll put newsnow out of business 🤣

I must admit I’ve surprised myself at how phlegmatic I am over Kyogo going. He’s just turned 30 on Monday there - same birthday as me - and he’s obviously been thinking and looking at a last big move with that in mind. On a £10m move I’m guessing he’s getting a pretty hefty signing on fee and let’s be honest, looking at it in business terms, we are not doing too badly out of the deal. Part of that being getting Jota back - well we’ve all said we need strong challenge and back up in the wing position and Jota is certainly an upgrade on Pslma and Yang.

The timing could be better but as for the CL - we’ve qualified for the next round so Villa is a little bit of a free hit. It was always going to be a stretch to finish top 8 and looking at it we’re still going to be playing a £9m striker next week - it’s not like we’re thinking of playing Mikey Johnston up there like happened in the past!

I do hope we have someone in the pipeline to replace Kyogo - and that player, and Adam - well there’s your opportunity to grab the place, become a hunskelping legend and make us remember Kyogo fondly but be okay that we’ve moved on.
The devils advocate in me says mmm
Jota coming back great but his form since leaving has been pish.
So if he signs he’s behind Mikey J and he’s not at Celtic.
And I’ll be delighted if he comes home to us
Him Kuhn and Maeda through the middle or our new Striker who ever it is.
The new striker will be similar to Dembelle/ Edouard type of player as that’s the template that Brendan Rodgers looks for.
So Sayonara KF.
We move on.
Mon the Hoops

Like most fans, I am not looking at this from the blame game, Tommy. We know that Kyogo will have pushed for this and so will Rennes. What we are saying is it is one more high profile European game and that should have been the agreement.

£10m is great return for an under-performing 30 year-old player, it is great for Kyogo to enjoy a less physical environment while getting one last pay-day and Rennes have signed an excellent player who should ensure they are not relegated. I'm sure every Celtic fan thanks Kyogo for his sensational performances that have provided us with so much success and enjoyment.

This Villa game is being written off by too many as a nothing match/free-hot. But there are the small matters:
  • £2m+ prize money for 1 game (this obviously means a lot to Celtic as we have missed out on crucial signings through bickering over a few £100K)
  • who we draw in the next round which is dependent on placing in the final table
  • our pride/standing in the game (if we get battered by Villa then the British media will rub our noses in it for years).
But the reality is that we are now going to face Villa with only Idah and Kenny (assuming Cummings does leave us without even being offered a contract, as reported yesterday). Let's hope Adam refinds his form very quickly and he does not sustain an injury against Dundee...
Correct.
We don't write games off , that's not our way.

i think many are missing a point which the suits have no doubt made to buck

Your hardly going into a game in the lurch when your lining up instead with the 2nd most expensive player in the club's history.

As Ange used to say 'when you get an opportunity you have to take it'.

Let's hope big Idah does.

Another thing big Ange used to say "Dont get to attached to players.. They move on..".

The trick is replacing them...

I'll wait till the 3rd of Feb before spitting the dummy oot.... But Jota in possibility of KT as well, bodes fine in my eyes, tells me Brendan is OK with the deals in place..

Getting another first team option up front and using Kenny as 3rd choice striker would I think round off the window for us..

No worries about Jota himself JamSam he's a gem of a player.

My only concern for him is, like Kyogo, he thrived on the quick break and catching the opposition on the backfoot with his pace and movement. BR's style is more subdued than Ange's so here's hoping Jota's obvious quality allows him to adapt.
I'm probably in the minority on here, S2, but I'm not too caught up in the narrative surrounding BR's style.
I think many factors contribute to how we play in any game, or indeed sequence of games.

The football we watched earlier in the season was more than acceptable. We've come through a very demanding schedule where results probably mattered more than the performance...
and all the while ( mostly ) the outrageous success continues.

I still see the team as a work in progress; still see areas that, for me anyway, need improvement.

Ange was a breath of fresh air, I loved his time at the club. I thank him for leaving me those treasured memories, but I am not too unhappy with things at present.

Naw I get that mate, the number of games played and injuries sustained are bound to take their toll but I just think we have slipped back into the same pattern that started creeping in during the 2nd season of BR's first stint....slipping into the comfort zone of overdoing the sideways and backward passing with no real intensity to our play or urgency to test opposition defences.

Heard someone describe it the other day as 'death by a thousand passes' and I thought it was a great analogy to describe how we're playing right now.

BR's probing possession football style only really works when you do it with pace and purpose, getting the ball forward quicker, quick sharp passages of play that pulls the opposition in all directions but we've only seen that in patches these last few months....we actually got a wee taste of it again first 45 against Young Boys the other night and were unfortunate not to capitalise on it a bit more.

Like I said earlier we've become ponderous on the ball we need to up the intensity of our play a bit more than what we've seen of late. (y)

If you read want Brendan says kyogo wanted to go months ago then his expression got stronger and it’s clear he wanted to go etc etc
Well that just shows it wasn’t the club it was kyogo
Celtic held on to him for as long as they could
We had absolutely no other choice but to let him go
For once it’s not the boards fault
Probably why his performance have dipped this season

He also said they’ve known for months so if they don’t get a replacement in then they have questions to answer. Which is a big part of many peoples concern here.

The wee man goes with our best wishes, perfectly understandable he wants to move considering he’s not been as good a fit under Rodgers.

Maybe I just miss the excitement and intensity of how Ange's team liked to play, BR's style requires patience and I think as a spectacle that patience gets tested at times....more so over the last few months.

Here's hoping we come out of this window and into the 2nd half of the season with a bit more vigour Frank.

I think we must factor in the incredible number of games we've played, having an adverse effect on our style and intensity.
10 games between champions league md 6 and 7 versus YBs 2 I think, it's going to play a part.
The fact that we have still been performing at a very high level is testament to the players ability and willpower but it's taxing and we see it in our second half performances, the levels dip.
Young Boys were extremely lucky not to be 4 or 5 down at ht the other night.
