transfer window

Watched Ndidi tonight. Very good. Would love to have him. Pity he is out of our price range.
Excellent player but is he really out of our price range?
Even if he was the only player who signed during the winter break then I think he'd be a brilliant acquisition for the club.

The way I see it is that Brendan done well bring in cover for the injured players we have.
Obviously, we don't know how long it'll take for the new Bhoys to settle in but I'm confident that they'll burst a gut trying to claim a spot in the starting line ups.
I have no concerns or worries regarding the future.
I agree. I think we have bought wisely with decent looking players who may kick on with gametime.

Jota looked good but wasnt immune to injuries or poor form
Same with Abada

When both were signed they were projects and turned out to be good buys.

We also have huge squad, so huge in fact certain players couldnt get selected for Europe.

I dont think we are weaker for losing Jota, first team anyway.

And hopefully new guys are good enough to be better than current starters to help team win league.

CCV is hard to replace. one player I really dont want to lose out of first team along with Calmac and Kyogo for goals

But other than those three I think we have decent options of comparable ability in most positions. And even those 3 the drop in quality is not that much and in some positions we een have 3rd option not that far off first team quality.

Could we use better players. yes.

Can we attract first team players better than we have? Maybe? Dunno? But do these better players want what we can offer? Dunno but I suspect probably not on wages we can afford.

Think our squad is strong
And we have huge support and big name manager who gets young players to play better over time.

Im quite optimistic for future in Scotland
Europe requires luck determination passion and synergy so hopefully Brendan can bring that to this squad

Stephen McGowan of the Daily Mail (sorry) is posting that Reo Hatate is close to signing his contract extension. This is a reporter with close links to Celtic so fingers crossed we tie up Reo and he can settle down and return to his best.

Matt O'Riley is being hotly tipped to step up the the Senior Danish squad and Celtic are hoping to tie him down for a bit longer (just like someone else, eh? 😉🏑).

Not amazing goal scoring stats for a left winger/attacking mifielder/second striker. Obviously that doesn't tell the bigger picture and I have no knowledge of this guy, but he looks like another cheap gamble. I could only see him being on the Japan bench (unused) for 1 friendly against Tunisia so at least he is unlikely to be missing for internationals during the Asian Cup.

Personally I'd prefer a more proven experienced player to improve our squad - having so many projects at the same time makes it difficult to give them all a chance and so several end up being a complete waste of money, as we have seen too many times.

I'm not convinced this would be my priority position for strengthening either, unless we expect a bid for O'Riley that is too good to turn down (but then we could spend those funds on a more experienced replacement player than this fella from a side midtable in the German 2nd division).

Read online crystal place (best fans in London) want Matt and paper is saying 10 million (I wouldn't even answer a phone call for him for that price) 20 million at least especially in the English market
Worth much much more imo tommy. Prices nowadays for ordinary players are shocking. Matt is no ordinary player looking at 50 mill at the very least.

We should be looking for at least £20m for O'Riley. Whilst he is a Danish international, he qualifies as a home grown player down south as he spent 6 years in the Fulham youth set up. That increases his value if he is moving to EPL.

Can we replace Matt in Squad? Not sure we can if his form is lasting. Doesnt matter how much we get offered replacing his current form is much more than we can get for him imo.

Reality lies with player though? Perhaps he doesnt like playing here that much and wants big wage now he has better stature in game.

If he was playing for Copenhagen instead of us and we wanted to buy him. How much would you be comfortable for club to spend on him?

For me he is still project albeit first team regular with lot of potential to improve. The wage to replace him with equally talented capable player who takes us to higher level requires buying a project with equal or better potential on wage Matt takes home or a player who should be more expeienced on a wage we probably cant sustain for long term.

Imo sad reality is wages for better players than we have is excessive.

I personally would rather Matt stays and grows with team.

Simply because I dont think we can afford wages of a ready made experienced better player.

Now because he has Celtic brand backing him with proven track record of value added to next club I think we can expect a premium on top of what he is worth?

Depending on how much clubs who want him will depend on whether they will match premium desired.

I dont think we would be that impressed with club if we spent 50 million on Matt. But some of these clubs especially sky backed cartel clubs might fancy him and maybe if the demand is there a large offer might be hard to refuse. But I worry its meaningless if we cant sustain the wages of better or equal quality player at a fee we can justify.

Various sources linking us with our latest punt/project/full time trainer.
Tiago Araujo, FC Estoril in Portugal, ex Benfica B, 22 y.o.
A left back, or a left winger, so covers 2 positions which will please the bean counters.

Why £20m. In the summer transfer window in England the average price for an average player was £40m.
We need to stop selling ourselves short. If Matt was playing in the English championship with his form, goals & assists this season do you really think the championship club would take a paltry £20m for him ? Bournemouth paid £25m for Alex Scott in the summer lol
He came through the English academy system so he ticks the home grown box for English sides in Europe.
Any English team comes in for him , start the conversation at £40m and haggle from there

This is a crucial transfer window coming up for us. Since Summer 2022 our player recruitment has been fairly hit or miss. I'm not blaming Mark Lawwell for this although it is worth noting that he joined us in May 2022.

I don't want to be harsh on a few of these players as they just signed in the summer and several suffered bad injuries very soon after signing. 5 players are already no longer with us: Jota left for a massive transfer fee that was not re-invested, Mooy sadly retired, Hakšabanović left in a huff and Jenz & Abildgaard left their loan periods early due to lack of playing time.

Of those 22 players signed in the last 3 transfer windows, I would say that Jota, Carter-Vickers, Daizen Maeda, Aaron Mooy, Alistair Johnston and probably Luis Palma could be classified as successful signings so far. And the first three names were signed previously to us on loans which were made permanent transfers, and two of them were higher transfer fees and wages than we usually pay so maybe there is value in spending a wee bit more on higher quality players, as you can make bigger profits when we inevitably punt them?

Mooy was a highly experienced player who had worked with Ange in the Australian national team, who was available for free as his contract with the Chinese club was cancelled and he had returned to Scotland with his Scottish wife, so no real recruitment needed to seal his signature.

Some of these players may well develop into very successful Celtic heroes as it still early, they are young and inexperienced and learning a new style of football in a country where referees have their own unique interpretations of the laws of the game! Nat Phillips was always a short-term stopgap, so no disrespect intended for him either.

I'd argue that we are not as strong a side as we were last season before we were supposedly going to invest in targeted quality players but instead reverted back to a scattergun approach to buying skillful lightweight youngsters, often in different positions than we actually needed to strengthen in.

Punt the deadwood, invest in fewer players of a higher quality, who can (hopefully - every transfer is a gamble) improve the squad. No-one is expecting us to spend £15m+ on players, but we can certainly afford the sort of money we paid for Jota, Eduoard, CCV, using our stash of cash hoarded away in the bank and used to pay dividends to shareholders and bonuses to the very highly paid board members.

My assessment of the summer signings.

Didn't like the fact that the 9 players were 3 CBs 3 wingers and 3 central midfielders.

Even allowing for projects this is too much depth in some areas, when other areas are as thin as the hair on my head.

In my opinion the best transfer was the one that didn't happen. Scales to Aberdeen. What a player he's turned out to be. Ok he got caught out last night, but I dread to think where we'd be without him.

Philips. Apart from getting injured when most of our other CBs were out, he's done pretty much what was required. However not shown anything to suggest he should be here after Jan.

Lager. Seemed ok from what I've seen. The red card in the CL didn't help, but seems decent enough.

Rocky. Not seen much due to injury, but still expect him to challenge Scales as the partner for CCV.

Kwon. Not seen much, but we really need a defensive midfielder. If Rodgers can't get a tune out of him, there's no point in him being here. The same could be said for Iwata although I still don't understand why he was given a chance, did well and even scored, and then got binned again.

Holm. Still young but easily the best of the 3 midfielders that came in. But seems to be a bit of a whipping boy for Rodgers.

Bernardo. Did ok last night, but if we can terminate his loan early I'd do it.

Palma. Looked world class against Aberdeen, then a shadow of that against Motherwell. However has shown enough to suggest that he's going to be a great player for us.

Yang. Apart from against Aberdeen has looked average to shite.

Tilio. Seen virtualy nothing of him. However I did like the little bit I saw against Motherwell. Hopefully he'll be involved again in out next game, but knowing Rodgers I wouldn't bank on it.

I pretty much agree with all of that. I can't get my head round the Iwata situation. Not only is he cool and calm, playing in a position we really need, but he frees up CalMac to charge forward where he has been very effective in the past. I thought Bernardo had a decent game last night. I think these youngsters have a lot of talent and are the sort of players we should be buying and developing - but not so many of them all at the same time.

IMO you should be introducing 3 or 4 of them into your first team squad, along with our own youths, rather than the 8 to 10 inexperienced young foreign projects - many of them in the same position - so some of them will never get a chance and our own youth development is stifled and these players sod off to somewhere else to get a chance.

Rodgers said he'd prefer a squad of 25 first teamers - I'd add in an extra defender, midfielder and attacker to make it 28, due to the overly physical nature of our domestic game, and the high quantity of matches we play.

Thats the problem with manipulated markets.

Sky boost their market prices by offering huge bungs that cover best wages.

This allows sky cartel clubs to hold assets which non cartel clubs cannot match wages at their chosen clubs.

That means Scottish market will stuggle to get maximum premiums for their assets because they cant match or better Sky cartel wages.

You might find a top quality watch at Paddys market that would sell for treble at Harrods. Trouble is you probably wont ever get offered Harrods prices at Paddys market.

tiered markets are market manipulation on a basic level. its a double whammy on clubs not in the cartel.

cant match the wages, cant command maximum premium if player isnt getting offered cartel wages in compensation for rejecting offer. Player might spit dummy if he aint getting new wage offer at cartel levels.

paying cartel wages without the cartel subsidy means you will need to sell to buyers at even lower prices when they offer better wage than your overextended wage payment.

broke to suit the cartel

aided by football authorities

the problem is even worse for scottish clubs who cant even afford average wage to best players.

how much would Motherwell get for O riley if he had exact same stats but playing for motherwell. he might actually be worth 40 million in england but motherwell would be lucky if they got offered 2 million. And because they cant offer wage rise they are hamstrung to clubs with better wage levels.

Good comparison TT ,makes sense.
