When a question is debatable I tend to do a PMI analysis in order to make up my mind. I write down all the Positive features of the proposal - see above, then I write down all the Minuses -see above and then I write down all the things that are Interesting but not Positive nor Minus. Having done so I plump for the proposal with a few caveats. It is a great technique when an issue in nuanced or finely balanced or new.

I have perfected my own method of determining questionable debating points by consuming as much booze as I can and going with the point that I least want to punch.

Don't know if it has any scientific credit, but it is a reliably replicated format throughout 8/10 examples over thousands of similarly controlled experiments.
