Sadly it appears as though this is exactly what it has become about in Pete's head. It isn't so much about doing the best for Celtic but about one-upmanship against other negotiators. It shouldn't be a personal battle of egos but doing your job.
In my opinion if we can strengthen the team by bringing in better players that fit within our financial model, then do it (of course, the board may/obviously do have a different opinion on what PL should be doing). By nickel & diming too many times we have lost out on more occasions than we have gained.
And in future please try to do our business early on in the transfer window instead of scrambling about at 11:50pm before the transfer window closes, as this works better for the playing side of our operations!
If ever there was a time for a club to maybe push the boat out a little further by purchasing a couple of real quality players to ensure success then it is surely now for Celtic over the next couple of seasons to gain immortality. We all love and appreciate the treble treble and 8IAR but don't blow 9IAR or you will never be forgiven.
We can afford to do this after several years of profits, a lot of income from sales (KT, Armstrong & Dembele sales, VVD add-on, Rodgers buy-out, etc) and also by cutting back drastically on our wage bill by losing nearly a dozen players that were here at the end of last season - especially considering several of these who've now departed were amongst our top earners.
Fans have spoken about Meling for a couple of years now but it seems as though our Scouts have only discovered him in the last week or so and still have made any effort to enquire about him. I truly believe he would be a success for us and is very affordable for us. But if we are to buy Greg Taylor then why not get him here in June so he was available for the European qualifiers?
