Neil Cameron: Scottish fans deserve the ultimate snub from Alfredo Morelos

THERE is a wonderful sequence in the book, and subsequent film, Fight Club in which those who are members of the never-to-be-named association attempt to get into fights with ordinary and unbruised members of the public.

Turns out, that’s not so easy to do. The vast majority of folk have no interest in physical violence, even when hugely provoked. As the author Chuck Palahniuk explained many years after his book was published, while humans are capable of almost anything, it is our base nature to keep out of trouble.

This is why most of us have never been in a proper fight. How many times have you been physically threatened? How often is abuse screamed in your face?
I have walked the streets of Glasgow after closing time, which some claim is as dangerous as popping out for a pint of milk in war-time Dresden, and perhaps once, at the most twice, did I come across trouble.
We know how to behave, you see. Well, most of the time. And then we get into a football ground and, well, anything that happened at Fir Park stays at Fir Park.

Except there were no secrets about what happened on Sunday. The television cameras clearly caught the hand signal, the sneering, and the lack of control. This, of course, was the Motherwell supporters, at least the section that houses their (really) young team.
They targeted Alfredo Morelos with personal abuse. This is fair(ish) enough. It’s football after all. Fans get to shout and swear. That’s the culture. Always has been. Except, these days, the shouty supporters can’t seem to take it when anything is said back to them.
Should Morelos have told the Motherwell support to “get it right up them” complete with rude gesture? No, but I didn’t have a problem with it and I’ll bet you said young team, who were to throw all manner of objects at the Rangers player, weren’t traumatised in the slightest.
And yet Morelos is the one punished for reacting to constant abuse.

This is a serial victim. He’s been racially abused, coins have hit off him and Aberdeen supporters even wrote a banner in Spanish about his mother. Oh, the Scottish banter.
If I were going about my business and a group of strangers shouted obscenities at me regarding my family and ethnicity, followed up by a bottle of Buckfast aimed at my head, I would react.
If Palahniuk had wanted all of his characters to get into a fight, he should have sent them to a football match.
Morelos was shown a second red card because he did break the rules. He was sent off, and will now miss a big game against Hibernian, for being a human being. The Colombian didn’t hit an opponent, dive, spit or go in late on a defender. After scoring, he gave some back to those who had spent a lot of their Sunday afternoon acting like louts.

Steven Gerrard said he didn’t disagree with the second caution. I simply don’t believe that. The Rangers manager was playing the PR game. He would be 100 per cent on the side of his player, as he should be.
I don’t see why it’s “acceptable” to shout all sorts of stuff at a football player but, when they react, out come the “he could have caused a riot” mob. If you look up the history of rioting, there aren’t any examples of people taking to the street because of a 50/50 penalty decision.

Same with Scott Brown after the Celtic Park Old Firm game towards the end of last season. Arms stretched in front of the Rangers fans with a broad smile on his face.
I feel sorry for Morelos. He was brilliant at Motherwell. He’s been brilliant all season. If the votes were taken now I’d have him as my player of the year.
He’s cleaned up his act, scored goals for fun – apart from in one fixture – and his all-round play has been raised several levels. Plus, he’s got a personality that is hard to dislike. Morelos isn’t perfect, but nobody is.
I’m guessing that he gets it when he walks about Glasgow and he chooses not to respond, which is what happens in a book with the word “fight” in it. Could you put up with that on a daily basis?
If I were in charge of Scottish football, which sadly is not the case, I would rescind the red card and force those Motherwell supporters so brave with their actions at the weekend to face up to Morelos.

My guess is they wouldn’t fancy it and hide away like the weans they are.
Morelos has 27 goals to his name this season. That’s impressive enough but, given he takes more flack on and off the pitch than anyone else in the Scottish game, his feats become all the more impressive.
I would be astonished if Rangers aren’t forced to fend off bids for their main man in January. Morelos, still only 23, would be cheap in relative terms. I’m not saying Liverpool would be after him but surely the scouts in England now realise that to dismiss talent north of the border is plain stupid.

It would be good if Morelos stayed at least until the end of the season. We need as many good players in the Premiership as we can get.
But I wouldn’t blame the lad if he once again turned to the Scottish public to
“get it right up us” and go somewhere else.

Man !! How hard are they trying with this. Try the stamp on Ralston . the boot in Broonies baws, the regularity with which he hits players who are off the ground, the punch on Frimpong, the stud rake on Julliene and these are only v Celtic, whats he getting away with v other teams. I think the guy is a good striker and a thug. The question for potential buyers ?? Would he get away with it in any other league than our own ?? 😬😬😬

If (when) he goes it will be everyone in Scotlands fault (including refs) for chasing away a superstar. If he stays he will be choosing to stay at a world class club with a world class manager to take on the world....

Now when eddy chooses to stay at celtic in january...it will be a different story "scared of a real challenge"....."only class in a wee league" and all that shite.

What a balloon Cameron is, Broony celebrates with his arms in the air, big difference to the angry buffalumps snarling face, now Cameron thinks Scottish football would be run better if he was running it, get over yourself ya clown. I think he's got an over inflated opinion of himself, what an embarrassment of a man.

That is an absolutely shocking denial of the actual truth (which is also caught regularly on television).

There is a genuine intent in Morelos to injure/hurt/maim other professional footballers. Assault after repeated assault with little or no consequence for his actions.

If Bameron wants to write an opinion piece, then he has to give space for an opposing editorial based on visual and physical evidence of this walking liabilty's conduct.

I'm still unclear at this moment if he will be available to play on the 29th, but if he does take a game - then we will be certain that he will leave a fair amount of human wreckage in his wake.

But this has always been the way of the hun. The peepo talk about the dignity of the likes of John Greig, but he was one of the dirtiest bastards to ever disgrace Scottish football and he would break bone without compunction or regret.

Jackson, Forsythe, Jardine and Greig were basically an extension of the Shankill butchers and in the same way that the authorities overlooked that death squads crimes, then the SFA followed suit when it came to disciplinary action against the hun hit-squad.

Always, always, always the victims.........

These same fuckwits said Neil Lennon brought it on himself.
( how dare he be born Catholic in the Six Counties) Different when it's a Sevconian, aw he's a victim, he is misunderstood...absolute shite. More orLess is one of the most snidey, despicable bastards ever to play in Scotland. I would love for him to suffer a very serious injury...it's what I want for Christmas

I agree to an extent that some of the abuse hurled at players of every team is sometimes disgusting and goes beyond acceptable limits, but why has he never had such a passionate defence of so many Celtic players that have been abused (including Lennon, McGeady, Broony, etc, etc) by fans - often illegal sectarian abuse???

As for the ridiculous statement about Morelos being hard to dislike? Seriously? The thug has an awful personality, snarling at opponents, referees, colleagues. He puts in nasty cowardly cheapshots deliberately trying to injure players so you could never trust him if you were playing against him. Fans of every other club despise him for his attitude and despicable behaviour.

Player of the year - aye right! Cameron probably also voted for Kent last year as he was sevco's best player for the simple reason he cheap-shot punched Broony in the coupon. Too much deludamol for him, I think.

That's a wonderful sense of humour you got there. The funniest thing is tho, it's all true.

He's already got one. Have you seen the face on it !!!!!

Horrible player on the park and a face only a mother could love 😁

Can't believe someone who considers themselves to be a professional journalist could ever submit such a piece with a straight face, n even worse, have an editor who happily publish such childlike nonsense.
Scottish journalism has always been utterly terrible since the 60s especially. Read a piece from the New York Times no long ago reporting on Celtics game v Cluj when put out Euro Cup n it was night n day . It was just a guy describing what went on that nite, no cheap digs, no over the top bullshit n no personal aspirations shoehorned in with gusto. Just average reporting on what he witnessed... it isn't that difficult.

Can anybody tell me how these mug supporters of sevo must feel when they see 5-6-7 Catholics take to the park on their behalf..surely it must be like a stake through the heart..
In the last few weeks I have seen Aribo,,Defoe,,and Katic bless themselves when they run on to the park, especially Katic who blessed himself twice at least as he came on in the cup final...
The hypocritical part of the majority of the sevco support spew when they see this happen and I have no doubt vocabulary like,,,Fenian Bas---d,,etc erupts from their sick volcanic mouths..but the really sick part of all this for me is,,,the Catholic players in the sevco team hear the profanity during games but are willing to turn a deaf one to hearing other people being called F/B etc,but in the same breath some of the sevco players have complained about Racism when playing abroad but never uttered a complaint about sectarianism,,maybe they are just keeping it all for their autobiography,s,or maybe the have asked the SFA if sectarianism is classed as an offence,,to which the SFA would have given the same answer as they gave to EUFA when they asked about it they replied something like,,,as far as we know some people prefer to be called Fenians..Fenians What..
Certainly not Bas---ds..
For our HUN GUESTS present tonight, the next time one of our own score for you mugs remember to bless yourselves,, using right hand,,North ,South,East ,West,,,for the zombies that is,,,top,, bottom,, left,, right .. .

HH.
