It's that time of year again.

No problem wae that boab, But see this overbearing pish and Guff that ave "Got to wear one" As some sort of Grattitude for their crimes...Naw mate.HH
2 world wars and the rest all economic/oil/mineral wars. People made to go over trenches into madness WW1 and stop a dictatorship WW2, shove the rest up their arses and poppies is a choice decision to wear one or not.

Netflixers, there is a recently-released version of All Quiet On The Western Front. I have watched the 1930s and 1970s versions but both were American made and this time it is a German production of the German book in the German language. I've read reviews and spoken to family who have watched it. I haven't been in the right mindset to watch it yet and by all accounts it is a more terrifying and harrowing indictment of war as the book from which it's derived.
World War 1 was a no 'good guys' war and its bad winners prepared the ground for World War Two. Ordinary people suffered universally.

I'll watch that
Have passed it on Netflix a few nights in a row, but I will this weekend
Get a different 'side' to it
I worked with a lot of guys who had German extraction, all great, hard working people, but rarely thought of things from their side, in war time
Their Fathers, Mothers, and Grandfathers/Grandmothers, went through some of the same terrifying things, that many of our families growing up, did
We had bunkers built in the centre of town during WW2 because of the Blitzkrieg which flattened Inverclyde, as far as I know, they are still there, we played in them as kids, they were covered in grass and overgrown trees etc, but we never really gave much thought as to why they were necessary, we all 'knew' about the Blitz, but we were children and had our own lives to get on with
My parents grew up during that awful time, and no doubt, some of my relatives used those bunkers during 'The Blitz'
Greenock and Clydebank were practically levelled, on those two nights of May 6th and 7th, 1941
Enjoy the weekend and here's hoping we enjoy a win tomorrow, going into the WC break

As mentioned previously, it's your personal choice, wear a poppy, don't wear a poppy, makes absolutely no difference to yours truly
I wear one to honour the memory of my family members who served in WW1 and WW2, some gave the ultimate sacrifice, and never returned
The wee guy in the middle is my Dad, who would have faced Goliath
So, have your own thoughts, and respect who you like, hate who you like
On this day, I remember my family members, who are no longer with us and who did their duty when called upon, in the fight against the Nazis
Have a pleasant weekend

Good post D, this is the problem with the wearing of the poppy, it's been jumped on by politics so many times.

It's supposed to be to remember those like your family who gave the ultimate sacrifice in various wars but the politicians gave hijacked it.

Obviously I am aware of this book, but I didn't know anything about it or any movies. I had been messaged by Netflix about this but would probably ignored it. Thanks for recommending it as it is brilliant. Not exactly enjoyable but brutal and gives a realistic view of the horror experienced by everyday soldiers. The decisions to deliberately sacrifice 1000s of soldiers by arrogant despicable generals is shocking, but true.

I liked 1917 too which was similar but from the other side's perspective.

Thanks for the recommendation and I'd also recommend it to others as a must watch.

The only way that ratbag Haig should be remembered each year is by an effigy of him being placed on top of a bonfire, hopefully snuggled up to one of Thatcher.
When his generals at Verdun told him the battle was costing 10,000 of their mens lives a day his reply was to tell them to get in touch with Blighty and order an extra ten thousand recruits a day 😡
Utter monster of a man 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
That chinless wonder was as thick as a boxing day turd.

Smart move by the Green Brigade yesterday. Didn't see the game but saw reports on this.

Thanks for that 26: just watched it. Absolutely brilliant. A must watch.

Just finished watching it
The acting and realism is superb
Terrifying to think what those boys went through
And I'm speaking of everyone who went through it3 Million lives lost trying to take a few hundred yards of land
17 million in total during the First World War
Lives are cheap when it comes greed and conflict Makes me sad to think of it The film, is well worth a watch, if you don't mind gritty realism, and blood and gore, and being pissed off at the politicians, and generals, who sent so many young folk to their deaths

Watch it on Sunday, German general shamefully made them needlessly attack the French lines with only 15 mins to go till armistice was declared, don’t think that actually happened it reality, might have been cinematic license 🤷‍♂️

The German military could never accept the decisions made by their political masters; they were confident victory would eventually belong to them. This led to a smouldering grievance that sowed the seeds of WW2.
Hitler actually served with distinction: apparently he was a brave soldier, being recognised several times for bravery. War history is crushingly depressing; and yet at the same time. ( for me ), Fascinating.

My cousin sent me this

Never a truer word was spoken

A POEM WORTH READING

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.
And 'tho sometimes to his neighbours
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Joe has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Veteran died today.
He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.
He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Veteran died today.
When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young,
But the passing of a Veteran
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?
The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.
While the ordinary Veteran,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.
It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever-waffling stand?
Or would you want a Veteran
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Veteran,
Who would fight until the end.
He was just a common Veteran,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Veteran's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honour
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, A VETERAN DIED TODAY."
