Mental Health

The value of sites like this for those who may feel isolated and detached is priceless. The opportunity to laugh, cry, debate and argue are all the examples of human interaction that folk need to stave off the hanging shadow of depression, low mood, inactivity and the genuine threat of folk's health being compromised.

Part of the Scottish/Irish psyche is to find humour in the darkest and most dire of situations. Our natural inclination is to use humour as a self-defence mechanism and while it sometimes verge upon cruel and vindictive, it is part of who we are and we use it in a self-deprecating manner too.

Autumn has cast it's long shadow and the Winter darkness is almost upon us. We tend to mourn and remember our loved ones who are no longer with us during the festive season and often our only escape or release is in finding pleasure from our football team.

That pleasure has been hard to come by recently, but in spite of our arguments and disagreements, it is the fans who are the heart and soul of this club, and it is our fellow supporters we turn to when we want to share our hopes and ambitions, or our fears and concerns.

Even our resident numpties become a valuable resource, as they provide us an outlet to let off some steam and get some of the frustration out of the system.

I know that through some pretty dark moments, my niece reading me some of the posts and comments brought me laughter and boosted my spirits, especially in the moments when the fear was close to overwhelming.

It's a fine gift we've been given here and we should use it at every opportunity to help, support, criticise, poke fun at, take the piss, and love one another.

I will fight you with pure love TyroneCelt, clay, Thai Tim.

As someone who has suffered with the mental health SP thanks for your brilliant post.
Also would like to say a big thank you to all the other brilliant members who have made a sufferer of mental health so tolerable with been able to feel part of something so special hear on the noise.
Of course the form of our beloved team has hardly helped matters in a season that means so much, but some of the humour on the noise really does brighten your day or night up.
But we are all individuals and as much as I admire the way you can deal with them 3 arseholes sp, I think I will stick with the abuse they deserve

With all this shit goin on with the team we love...added with the stress that covid has brought....there is potential that it can affect mental health on some...so Bhoys and Ghirls....take it easy, and if you are affected....seek help 🍀
I did the receptionist on the phone said there are no appointments. and she will decide if it gets to the doctor

I said id rather not discuss the issue over one.

she said there are no appointments then sorry

hahaahaa

sounds like a joke but I cant get past the crazy receptionist with telling her what is up with me to see if I deserve a call back

I just realised too that the 4 digit number amongst the other digits is 1690

now my mental health taken another dimension

:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p

Im fine btw

was really urine issues but im no telling the receptionist she aint bound be any health oaths and the issue resolved itself over time.

thankfully

when I fone back I get same run-around 30 minutes of options just to get an answer

:p

if a then push 1
if b then push 2...

30 minutes later

if you need to talk with an advisor then push 1690

Doctor's receptionists are a very special breed TET. Without the benefit of standard grade biology never mind a medical degree they have enough knowledge to triage everyone who calls and tells them their symptoms. Don't know why we bother spending so much money training doctors!!!

few years back now I was at an outpatient clinic for endocrinology

and I took a hissy fit with the doctor cause I wasn't getting diagnosed but getting test after test and no feedback

he said I probably need to refer myself to mental health cause I have no patience

well I went to my gp

and he said to get mental health you need to self refer yourself

so he gave me a number

I got an appointment at Patrick health centre

got a chat with an advisor to tell them my woes and life issues

and she decided CBT would help

I got a 12 week group therapy of CBT and best bit was on 1 occasion sitting in reception dude I assume doctor popped into reception booth to talk with receptionist

and he was reading out quite loud the last persons issues

night tremors he said what is it with these people they all have night tremors

now thankfully I dont have night tremors whatever that is but ffs

imagine I was a person at mental clinic with night tremors and I heard that dude mocking his patients

wow.

CBT was load of shte by the way

ok if your on your own with anxiety and awareness

but impractical bollocks if you take turn in reality and red mist descended

I think: One flew over the cuckoo's nest" is the training video used for mental health unprofessionals nowadays.

Mildred Ratchet seems to be their role model for empathy, compassion and passive-aggressiveness.

fill out the bit of feelings paper

on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being extreme

do you think about suicide.

now im not sure I ever thought about suicide but is that really a suitable question to ask at assessment stage

do you get sectioned immediately if you get close to 10

I thought ill just stick 1

and computer said I was anxious Lmao

We have to take similar self-assessments to check if we're appropriate and fit to work.

I guess they must assume that we're all specialists in the field and recognise the traits concerned with mental wellbeing.

There are questions about self-harm and suicide too. I'm not sure too many folk are going to scale their mark up if it's going to affect their ability to work.

However - I guess watching Celtic this season is akin to self-harming.

Sometimes working with others mental health all day can have that effect. No excuses but it can be awfy difficult.

There's plenty of blurred lines between where reality and mental illness meet, Shammy.

How many times have you been pulled into a genuine moment of delusion or an hallucination and managed to incorporate it into the 'real world' around you?

It becomes the norm to work between two versions of the world and it actually seems quite strange when you then interact with other folk away from work who don't have conversations with electrical appliances and doorbells.

I'm not being flippant or irreverent.........those things actually become a normal part of our day.

John, this is a tough one and easy one to write. I know that might seem to be another example of my conflicted nature but hopefully it will make sense.

I'm the wrong side of 50 now and with the benefit of that experience and hindsight, I think back to old friends who found succor and comfort in the bottle or the needle.

It was more preferable to them to be labelled an "alkie" or a "junkie", than it was to be labelled a "jessie" or a "fruitcake".

That was the world we lived in and there is still a residue of that attitude in the world we live in now.

How many times have you heard someone be told to "man up" or "grow a pair"?

In that type of environment, it takes huge reserves of courage and conviction for someone to say: "you know, I'm struggling a bit here" or to just plain old ask for help.

To confront and face an invisible enemy is far more horrific than having to confront two-tonne Tam and his mate psycho sid. At least you know what options are available when faced with violence. Stand your ground or run like fuck, either way - there's a course of action you can take. That's not the case with mental health and until someone has lived it, experienced it, or known it - then no one can possibly understand the alienation and destruction it can cause.

That is why fine brave folk like yourself are the best support mechanism in the world for someone who may be at odds with the environment they inhabit and the perceived reality of their circumstances.

Booklearning is all fine and well. I admire folk who have dedicated a huge portion of their time attempting to interpret the knowledge of others, but there is a helluva lot to be said for learning from shared experiences and the better understanding of problems we may have to encounter ourselves one day.

You don't need me to blow smoke up your arse, but I'll applaud you and thank you for courage anyway. I know who I will turn to when the shit inevitably hits the fan again.

I am so glad that the barriers around mental health are starting to be broken down with the awareness around such a serious subject.
Here in Ireland, sadly it can still be treated as a taboo subject, and men in general are quite bad around the subject as we can tend to use the male ego of nothing wrong with me, when in truth they can be suffering no end.
People need to know that there is great strength in admitting that they are struggling in certain areas within there life's and help is available and it is OK, in fact good to go and seek it.
For so many people they feel they have no where to turn to, and worry about what people will think but they will be amazed at just how much understanding there can be, when you look.
It is far better to seek help than to continue to suffer in silence.
I personally feel you can break most mental health issues down into 4 categories where sufferers feel most at risk.
Physically
Emotionally
Mentally
Spiritually
Sadly for many when the spirit within goes then suicide can start to look attractive
But please for anyone who can be suffering, or know of anyone suffering, let them know there is always help available and you will be surprised just how much kindness there can be within this world
