On a player I hadn't heard of and who can't get a game for Atalanta. The same fans moan that Big Ed, for all his goals, assists, youth and potential, isn't worth the money we paid. Damned if you do and if you don't.

Not happy with this six month loan, no option to buy nonsense. If Burke is a revelation, WBA will whisk him back south at the end of the season, and we’re left stranded. The only way we can win is if he’s rubbish, and we can be grateful we’re not landed with another dud. Surely Lawwell could have negotiated either an option to buy the player outright, or at least an extendable loan.

Meanwhile, as the Huns gear up for a big title push with experienced old hands, we look like we’re sitting on our hands; if Lawwell is haggling over a few hundred thousand for Bayo and we lose him like we did McGinn, then I very much doubt if Brendan will stick around after this season. Has PL learned nothing from the summer window fiasco? We need to show that we are Scotland’s top dogs, and make a significant signing. We’ll never be able to attract another Sutton or Hartson while Sky money bloats the English league, but surely there are strikers out there on the continent within our budget that even Mr Lawwell can’t screw up for us.
