Never a fan of Man U as I was a Liverpool fan in the pre-Souness era and I loved the Ron Atkinson days when they were shite. Hated Ferguson purely for his success as the Man U manager but with time and maturity (quit laughing at the back) I grew to respect him and still do.

I read his book, Leading, and the Scottish club he appears to have most respect for is Celtic. I'd say he references them second only to Man Utd. He says some pretty damning things about the dead club.

Will always claim if Mark Hughes hadn't scored the 3 goals that he did in 2 finals against Palace and Barcelona then the legacy that Alex Ferguson set for himself possibly wouldn't have come about.
So still ranks way behind the other Scottish great managers imo, as he did get the time and the money to create such a legacy.
No way would he have been given that time nowadays, and was fortunate to be around at the right time and with the luck of having such a talented set of youngsters also.
His man management skills were set by other greats before him and no more so than Big jock himself.
Such legacies like the great Scottish managers of the past will never be achieved on the same scale again imo, yet what Ange is currently achieving may well put him alongside such an outstanding achievement in what he could bring to the Scottish game, and on a far higher achievement than most done within the English league as such.
So the biggest ambassador for Scottish football will always remain with Big Jock and possibly Ange may well become the only one to ever challenge his achievements still imo.

As usual John, you make many fair comments in your post above. One statement which jumps out at me, is that Sir Alex was fortunate to be around when United had more than a few very special players .Right time right place if you like. I think the same also applies to Big Jock. The combination of his astute management skills, together with the magnificent players he inherited, combined to give us these truly wonderful, very special memories. Everything fell into place. The stars aligned, our wonderful young players were in situ. What they needed was direction. Enter Big Jock. Right place, right time ? That applies to the players, the management, and the club. HH.
