Celtic v AC Milan - Match Thead, all comments here

By this time on any euro game I usually feel a rising optimism. I have to report that today I have none. Saturday brought into sharp focus that Slippy has Lenny on toast every game we play them and he has now gone three games like that. I will wait until the mole leaks the team to see if my confidence moves off the bottom of the dial. Every game so far this year, I have hoped we would click, every game we have failed. This game tonight will improve rock bottom confidence in the team or beat it down further. With two games against the Dons hard on its heels, ti is vital Lenny gets I right team and tactics wise and the players stand up and be counted. So far, they have been a fucking disgrace.
Agreed TV mind you we have seen glimpses of what this team can do albeit on a very small scale. Really need to see some creativity tonight as in that department as it has been brutal to date

Last night was the first time ever that I deliberately didnt watch the champions league or tuesday because I simply couldn't be bothered , when Jock Stein said football is nothing without the fans he really was spot on but I dont think this is what he meant. Also with Dortmund playing to 18 thousand fans last weekend how does that sit in european football? Are visiting teams to play in front of opposition fans but none at home if it were a uk team? What a mess
The league are meeting tomorrow to plan for the expected football lockdown as the virus goes tonto. Unless people realise it is them who are causing the spread and screw the fucking nut, the league, never mind euro games are going to be halted. We cannot expect young men to put their health at risk for a game.

Likewise winter but I only watch ourselves in Europe so as you can guess not much of a fan of the European football. This is all about governments getting involved in sport and weather it counts in votes. But tonight without our fans on a European night does leave an empty feeling alright

Problem been they have a different view in some other countries in Europe where fans can attend

That was before the massive rise in infection rates all across Europe. Belgium have announced they are in very deep shit and their health care system is about to be engulfed. Fans going back is going to be halted where it is happening and for us, there isn't a snowballs chance in hell any fans will be back for a minimum of three months, and only then, if people screw the nut.....so, it probably wont happen at all this season or at least until the dark winters nights are over. As we all know, the night is dark and full of terrors.

And yet they are allowing 4k into the match against the scum tonight

Feel much the same. Just want us to show up and make sure they know they are in a game.
The only name I disagree with in your team is Frimpong. I like the bhoy but he really was dreadful at the weekend, and that in a team, that dreadful should have looked good.
Know we don't have many options there just now ( is danny mcgrain in the squad?) but do think he should be dropped. My opinion.
Take a performance tonight above anything
HH
El ham would have started if available

Yes they are, but I suspect all that will be stopped. It depends on how the other European countries react to this, one thing is for sure, it wont happen anywhere in the UK for a long time.
Agreed but as everything comes down to money they won't shut down football as to many clubs will go to the wall along with the votes, looks like a new sofa will be in the offering, maybe Santa will be able to deliver one

To be fair to Frimpong, Slippy saw his threat and put people in his way. What was needed was the midfield to create space and drag the cover on Frimpong away. As we know, the midfield could have spent the game in the canteen queuing up for a pie and bovril for all they contributed. What fucked up Frimpong was Lenny and his failure to see that and change it. He used five subs, ffs if that wasn't an admission his initial selection was an utter failure, then I don't know what would. We were set up to fail, and we did.

As usual I'll be supporting the Bhoys tonight, although I've got a real fed up feel about the start to the Euro campaign proper this season.

Saturday wasn't the first defeat from them, but it's the first time the crappy mood has lingered longer than a few hours.

The last couple of times (and even back to the semi-final defeat with Ronnie) I've brushed it off and just knew we'd come back stronger.

However, we've now only won 3 of the last 7 games against that bunch of pricks and one of our victories was the LC Final when we were distinctly second best!

If the board can't see a worrying pattern emerging then they really should go to Specsavers!

See? I can't even get through a post on a European thread without getting sidetracked to last weekend. 😖

Anyway, back to tonight. I'd obviously love to see us get something from the game but how we're going to be able to open up AC Milan is a mystery. We have to start with a back 4 otherwise things could get really fkin messy.

What personnel we should use is no longer and issue for me. Get people that are 100% fired up and ready to run through walls. No one else should even be considered. Welsh stays in for me as does Laxalt and Ajeti and Griff are surely going to be crucial at some point tonight. I'd bin Duffy and go with Welsh and Ajer in the middle of a back 4, unless Jullien is fit. I've avoided ALL news on the squad since Saturday so I really don't have a clue who's fit or not.

HH guys

Duffy will start, more todo with the politics of it. to have a costly player dropped because he has been shit, would be another field day for the press, but, it needs to be done. He has sadly been as mediocre as I thought he was as a player. I looked at the posts of fans who he has played for who said, very brave etc, good in the air, but hopless on the ground and far too slow. I am glad we didn't buy him, thats the only positive I take from him so far. Hopefully he steps u, because on recent form he shouldn't even be in the fucking squad, never mind playing.

Duffy will play because we have no one else to replace him. We have three centre halves (if you include Elhamed) out.
As far as I'm aware Duffy has never played in a back 3, certainly not regularly, and signing him to play in a system he hasn't before looks like a mistake.
Go back to a back 4, play him with Ajer beside him and tell him to do what he does best, defend the penalty box.
Tonight playing him in a back 4 (which we should but probably won't) will play to his strengths as we'll be under pressure and defending deep. Domestically we defend with a high line, teams try to counter attack us and his weaknesses, mainly lack of pace, are exposed.

Duffy is not the reason for our problems, after the killi game we were screaming for a no nonsense CB and now we have one we are still not happy. I didn't see El fatty get any joy from him on Saturday. He is and will never be this fancy footballing CB unlike others we have, but which of them will put there bodies on the line for the cause. Like what has been said before the problems stem from the midfield the engine room of a team. When that engine is operating properly we can operate like a well tuned merc at the moment we are just like a pushbike

He has been awful. he needs to improve vastly. as do the whole team, but he was brought in to improve us defensively, he hasn't. thats the bottom line. We need him to step up and fast. tonight would be as good a place as any to start.

I guess we brought in Duffy to partner Jullien and so far I think they've only played together once - and that was the 5-0 victory against Ross County. You'd suspect they'd be a slow pairing but we haven't really seen them in action yet. Unfortunately circumstances and injuries so far this season means our revamped defence hasn't had a chance to gel yet.

What with 2 games per week plus the disruption of the farcical/disastrous international break means we have not even had much time to sort things out on the training pitch. Our highly psid management team and professional players need to get things sorted out pretty damn quick!
