They did all sign for us but it was in the days before the internet when there was thousands of people like me and you constantly refreshing our mobiles for hourly updates. Some of these discussions and negotiations may have taken days. And this was in simpler times without agents negotiating on their behalf. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age but my boss tells me to keep my emotion out of our negotiations (difficult for me!).
