Julien Christopher

Forgive me for playing Devil's advocate a little on this. I'll qualify it initially by saying he genuinely looks a top player and I totally agree on the experience being required and a welcome diversion from the 'project' approach.
But I have a nagging voice asking me why at 26 he's not been picked up elsewhere? I keep hearing how France post Wenger is a saturated market from youth level to the top league for English clubs in particular. Late developer possibly but as small a concern as it is I've got a wee voice saying, if he's that good in that league how come we're getting a relatively free run at it?Especially given the media have been over it for a few weeks.
I get your gist niall,,I thought much the same when we signed lubo :sneaky:HH

I know i’m tempting fate, but as I don’t do superstition, I will put this up.

When I started to look at the numerous clips of this young guy, I liked what I saw. In fact that is an understatement. Now I’m big and ugly enough to know that clips aren’t everything, but there were pieces of skill repeated enough to show me he possessed a great touch, can pass a ball and was strong in the air and on the ground.

After I decided that I would love him to be here, my inner self defence mechanism kicked in, warning me not to get carried away. To think of the asking price, the wages, the fact us going for him might focus English gold on him and if that happened, curtains would be the order of the day. Black ones.

The story wouldn’t go away, as many rumours do, so, I believed we were actually going for him and a bid would be submitted. That to me gave me great heart, at last an actual defender was being liked at to sign. Never happened under Rogers, with his efforts, in the most critically in need of assistance area of our team, where, to put the best possible slant in it, was fucking woeful.

A real defender who would be ours was a welcome change.

My inner, we can get this lad voice, began to shout the odds. But always lurking was the, don’t get ahead of yourself you big twat, and so ever since he appeared on the radar, he dominated it and I swung from certainty of each position.

He will be here and if we get a good quality RB to partner up, I actually think I will pass oot. Of course the continued noise about young Kieran has us all, even those who claim adamantly that he won’t go, an uneasy feeling that he might. I always thought he would never leave whilst we had unfinished business tonreach 10. If he does feel the same that will be as good as anyone coming in, so important is he to us. I’m confident is a worried as fuck way he will stay.

Imagine going into euro games with a defence you have confidence in? New territory and a welcome change.

Lenny talked about six players and I can’t wait to see the others, young Luca seems to be heading, but he isn’t first team ready yet. Or, who knows the lad might be that good he is, either way I am confident of him sharing the load and playing a part. The other three players to make the six I am eagerly looking forward to seeing arrive.

It had to happen this window, that’s no guarantee that it would with us though, but I knew the board had to tool up. There is too much at stake. The price of inaction would be horrendous and the support would have gone tonto.

I am never slow to put the boot in to the board when I feel they have dithered. You may have noticed. Let’s be clear that its not a situation I want to be in. I want just one thing, that we have a go. That we do all we can to help us improve. Even if we fall, the fact we did our best and gave it our all for me is the key.

So hats off to Lawell for this signing of Julien. For looking at and actively pursuing him and other quality and bringing them to our great club. Keep it up and we move up.

I know Julien will be a great addition. Everyone and their aunty who want to see us fail continually point to our weakness in defence. And they have a point obviously, especially in terms of Europe. Improving there gives us a better chance to secure CL qualification and bank the riches. Those riches kill Sevco. We are better than them by a distance right now. Having additional resources to continue to bring in quality keeps them buried inside old sofas, trying to find a handful of change.

I am, to borrow a term from the young team, fucking buzzing about how we are recognising the need for quality.

Julien encapsulates that and I thank Lenny for seeing him and Lawell for getting him. The direction is right, now. We have fucked about too long. And for that, I am the happiest greetin faced cunt I know. HH

No fair enough Niall it's a valid point you make mate but like you say he's maybe just a late developer or he's maybe just been overlooked.

One of the points I've made during a few (heated :D) debates is that not every player is on the 'elite' clubs or EPL club's radars, they are not all seeing and sometimes good players get overlooked for various reasons i.e. good player at an under-performing club so nobody paying much attention, the club they're playing for looking for more money than interested clubs thought he was worth, outshone by exceptional talents at the time who grabbed all the headlines etc.

Look at Lubo, played in France most of his career yet none of the big clubs seemed to know of his existence yet the guy was a genius with a football at his feet. It happens sometimes mate.

Kds transfer thread check out hoops in paris posts , will give you a lot of details missing ,,,,to long to post
Thanks for that Kelly. Some good info on that from Hoops in Paris. Looks like he's a player who has found himself of late. Wouldn't be the first centre half to take a while to pick up his trade. Seems to be better for a footballing centre half beside him, usually more experienced. Maybe Freiburg picked him up too young. We might be the ones to gain from it. Fingers crossed. Thanks again Kelly(y)

Very true. Read a good book on scouting Nowhere men and a lot of the older scouts said the new breed followed players like sheep based on stats and they can see the ones who are ready or 'ripe' as I think he put it, but couldn't see the ones who would develop or worse had already peaked. Looks like we might get one due to peak from the KD site Kelly mentioned. I so hope so!

Congerton type scouts mate......look how that one turned out for us. These guys seem more like data analysts than they do fitba scouts, aye stats can be a helpful tool to gauge a player's strengths and weaknesses in certain areas but they don't tell the whole story or take into account the unquantifiable strengths like leadership, determination, dig etc which are massive positives for any team.

HH Niall.
