Saka, Sancho, Rashford and standing up to racism

I was on holiday in Castlebar a few years ago and couldn't get into a cafe for lunch as they were all so busy. I walked up the road to the street that ran behind the main St and found a lovely wee place that was very quiet and the food was great. The only reason I think it was empty was because it was owned and run by Eastern Europeans.
That saddens me. There is a lot of racism and discrimination in Ireland.

I too grew up with fuck all. My mother and father killed themselves working tryin to feed a large family. We were taught right and wrong. I've tried to stay as close to right as I could, but unfortunately when you grow up in a conflict that is not easy. I am lucky because I had good parents and a close knit family and we kept each other right. Most of these lads are lucky to have one parent never mind two. So the environment they grow up in is very different.
Spot on TD. If it's true to say we're all the product of our environment then perhaps that's where we should look to at least try to find some kind of solution. There's no easy answer I'm sorry to say.

Education Frank is a big thing. As the old saying goes give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Or something like that.

I'm sure I've read the odd English bastard, or orange bastard comment ( ok, one racist, one religious ) on The Noise. So, no racism ? Also you're absolutely correct when you say ALL LIFE'S MATTER. That's the whole point of BLM. Perhaps it would've been better to have a slogan which states Black Lives Matter Too !
Simple Frank, but also excellent comment mate.

HH

I've walked through groups of black people in London at their BLM marches and been abused Larry. I dont form my opinions on what the media tell me. I dont support the movement. Black lives matter 100% they matter the same to me as any other race. If you think every member of the movement is an angel and has the vision of love and piece between black and white people then more power to you mate....im not for a moment saying all fans who booed aren't racist. That would be daft..but it's also daft calling anyone who doesn't support BLM racist. Easy way to shut down debate. "I don't support BLM"....."you're a racist"
Probably just abusing you cause yer a moaning faced can’t😂😂😂😂😂😂

I work in an environment with multi -cultural children.
Unfortunately racism among them is very much alive.
On questioning the kids you find out that it is in the families.
They dislike each other, we have Black,Asian, Chinese ,European all behaving badly with one.another.
We also have the religious side involved too.
Apart from the name.calling...we have had to deal with being told all white people are going to hell.

Where do you think that comes from? families.
Accepting other cultures is very much part of our education system.
At present it is not doing very well.

A bit of perspective re the penalty miss last night. If you are not up to it then don't take the wages, you are paid to be a footballer get over it.

Bukayo Saka signed a 4 year / £2,080,000 contract with the Arsenal F.C., including an annual average salary of £520,000. In 2021, Saka will earn a base salary of £520,000, while carrying a cap hit of £520,000.

could be flipping burgers

Bukayo Saka Salary per hour

  • On the basis of a 40-hour-week, Bukayo Saka earns £535.71-per-hour

So only on 10k a week at a club like arsenal, which is still very low in term's of the talent he possess.
Would have been delighted if we had him on twice his current contract even three times.
Fantastic young player in the making so is it right for potential racists to hamper his career?
Far more should be done to call out these cowards who hid within social media and have to be made an example of

Brilliant topic Lubos, and well done for raising it.
WHAT IS RACISM?
WHAT IS A RACIST?
We all like to claim we aren't racist, but are we really?
I have no problem stating that I detest unionist, the English regime that bought trouble to our lands etc, does that make me a racist?
We all took great joy at England's loss last night does that make us all racists?
Very fine lines between taking the piss and showing racism and in general the education and culture issues makes this a very sensitive subject.
I would say many of us have experienced racism or witnessed racism in some shape or form.
Even in Ireland racism can be rife against a black person more so than an Eastern European which in a country that has suffered racism in many forms is still quite staggering but such is the level of education.
I'm not going to pretend that I haven't commented racist remarks in the past cause I have and that would just make me a hypocrite, but I have learnt the error of my ways thankfully.
I go by a way of thinking that every life matters, regardless of race, colour or gender, does that mean I like everyone, no it doesn't.
I don't know any sevco supporters thankfully, but does that give me the right to show my own racist side by hating them just because they are a Scottish protestant? No it doesn't, yet my feelings could tell me that it's OK to.
I try to go by the principles now that now I won't discriminate against anyone because of colour, race or gender even if I don't particularly like them regardless.
Still have my own issues regarding groups and organisations and it still needs work upon my own behalf.
So in short, I believe racism in general is a personal choice everyone in society needs to address and question their own morals around the subject instead of hiding surrounding the subject, and that goes for everyone, black, white, race, gender etc
Terrific post John, full of the type of things I enjoy discussing. Perhaps too many for a football forum though. Just one thing to comment on of I may. Standing against injustice, even historical injustice , doesn't qualify as racist.

Maybe so Frank, but dosen't historical injustice of the past play such racist actions upon today?
You can't change the history of the past, but you can change the future if your willing to do so.
How?
I don't really know, but I think it's a moral issue where education upon the history of the past holds no real baring upon one's actions of today

Let's see if they are true in their fight against racism in the sport. I believe they should Forfeit their next match, just as they were going to do when away fans attacked their players, and show the scumbag English "fans" that they mean what they say.
Never happen that would be admitting they still have a racist problem ,a problem they keep paying lip service to for more than 40 yrs

Ever since the days of cyrill regis ,viv anderson ,lauri cunningham the first black players who suffered abhorent abuse representing there club and counrty the english FA have did fk all just give it lip service for a few days and move on

would love for all the coloured players to refuse to play for there country untill those in power do more than make weak statements and the social media companys to be more punishable in the courts for not reporting the accounts faster
to many keyboard warriors attack in the knowledge big tech will do feck all and that the cops are useless

Totally agree John. Handed down generation to generation. Some even call it "heritage". So many aspects to it as you say. Context of course is everything, but there comes a time when we have to question ourselves too. The difficult thing is to turn our backs on generational teaching and choose which way we want to go. As I said earlier, there really isn't an easy answer.

The white players could take it out of the FA'S hands. They all agreed to walk off should their black team mates recieve abuse from away fans....they could show solidarity in the next game. Turn up for kick off then leave the pitch as soon as the whistle blows.

An excellent thread Lubo. The racist abuse against these young players is disgraceful. Like most people on here I abhor abuse or victimisation based on race, skin colour, religion or sexual orientation (although sadly when I was going up I will admit to joking about these things as was the way back in the 80s).

Obviously all lives matter, but I always felt one of the main messages about the Black Lives Matter campaign wasn't just about highlighting racism by whites against but to also to reiterate to black people disenfranchised with society that their lives are important too. Sadly far too many black people are killed by other black people who just do not place any value on the lives of other gangs, etc.

absoloutely not. the point made is the pressure kick been discussed and not events after, football is a highly paid pressure sport so when you are paid handsomely to play the game you accept the responsibility that comes with it, if you miscalculate your kick that's football, you get up and continue, however, all the shite about him been too young for the role he had been given and failed is all shite, he plays to reach finals and he plays to win, so expect the other team to be of similar mindset, the Italians guessed right and outfoxed the young guy, but I am sure his uncomfortable sleep will not be as hard as the uncomfortable sleep of the guy who has maybe no job and 5 mouths to feed and raise.

Terrific post BB, but I think it's important not to confuse gangland violence with racist violence. I've had more than my share of heated debate with racist morons who just dismiss the obvious truth by saying things like " they just kill each other anyway "

We have a huge problem in Ireland with the travellers calling out the racism and discrimination card, yet the majority of them now wouldn't have a clue what the inside of a caravan looks like and still like to try and terrorised many a civil person.
So where is the right balance?
Nothing about the colour of there skin or the way they can speak but in general you couldn't trust them as far as you could throw them, and if you throw one then an army could come you way as they believe intimidating behaviour will get them what they want.
Is that some of the behaviour races can do? And your a racist if you don't like or agree with there ways of life?
Everyone has choices in life nowadays, yet so many believe that there choices are acceptable when they are far from it.
